Many artists, business owners and organization members have online shops at CafePress.com, which is a website that allows you to make novelty items imprinted with your own images and logos. Anything from bags to caps to t-shirts to drink coasters can be created and sold from your own CafePress shop. You can create your own external site linking to your CafePress shop, or you can simply use the space provided by the company. If you've set up your CafePress shop, but aren't making money, here are some tips to boost your sales and traffic.
Titles & Descriptions
The reason you aren't making money with your CafePress shop might have something to do with your titles and descriptions. Not only must you appeal to people who land on your CafePress page, but you must also find ways to get shoppers there in the first place.
One of the best ways to do this is to maximize your use of keywords. This will improve your search engine ranking and will help people to find your CafePress shop more easily. The title and description of each of your products should have the keyword mentioned at least once, perhaps twice in your description.
Furthermore, it is important that your description is both informative and entertaining. Why would someone want to buy your product? Appeal to your target market's desires and you'll sell far more products at CafePress. For example, if you sell sports-related merchandise, you might want to talk about showing team spirit or making other sports fans jealous.
Designs
Many people who start CafePress shops start creating products with designs that just don't fit. For example, if your logo is square and you use the same design for every product, it's going to look strange on a button or clock. Make sure that your design is the same shape as the product on which it will be emblazoned, and be careful about logos or designs with tiny lettering.
You also have to think about color schemes when creating your designs on products. A design that would look great on a white t-shirt might look terrible on a black baseball cap or an off-white bag. No matter how much your audience wants to support your company or organization, they aren't going to buy products that aren't aesthetically pleasing.
Images
After cruising CafePress shops for more than an hour, I started to notice a trend: poor quality images. If you take an image that is designed for the Internet and try to put it on a product, it's not going to come out like you think. Most web-quality images have a resolution of about 72 dpi (dots per inch), while an image for your CafePress shop should have between 150 and 200 dpi.
In addition to the quality of the image, you also have to consider mass appeal. A picture of your pet rabbit might have significance to your family and friends, but is someone you don't know from the other side of the country going to want the rabbit on his t-shirt? This doesn't mean you can't use personal images, but make sure you create them with mass appeal in mind. Add an attractive border and a funny saying about pet rabbits and you might have yourself a winner.
Pricing
You might think that the cap with a picture of your horse on the front is worth $40, but do you really think that anyone else is going to share your opinion? This doesn't mean that you should price your CafePress products under market value, but you should keep them within reason. Sometimes it helps to start off selling your products at a lower price to engage the interest of shoppers, then raise them slowly to the point at which you would like them to be.
Of course, some CafePress shop owners have experienced the exact opposite with their pricing. The owner of ZapGraphix.com recently stated in her article that she noticed a sharp increase in sales when she raised her prices last month. Perceived value is important in any type of sales, including CafePress, so don't lowball your prices or customers will assume that you produce low-quality work.
Offline Advertising
Just because your CafePress shop is located online doesn't mean you can't promote your work offline. Do you wear your t-shirts or carry your handbags? Is your computer mouse cushioned by your own CafePress mouse pad? You can even get mobile by featuring your bumper stickers or license plate covers on your car.
You can even put out flyers in your community or create brochures to send out to local businesses. Promoting your CafePress shop should be a high priority if you want to increase your sales.
